Stay Healthy During Ramadhan |

Many people say that during the Ramadhan month they tend to gain weight rather than lose or maintain it. This is mainly due to the over indulging at the Ramadhan markets and the lack of exercise. If you stick to these simple tips you’ll find that you can get through the month without a spike in weight and you might even have a little more energy than you normally would throughout the fasting period.
Break your fast with something light and sweet – When you’ve gone through the day without food your energy levels will be low and the worst thing you can do is eat a large meal as soon as you are able to. Your body needs some glucose so your energy levels can |
come up; this is why dates are often consumed once it’s time to break fast. If you’re not a fan of dates then open with a bubur. It is light and your body will not need too much energy to break it down. After consuming this you can go for prayers and then afterwards your body will have the energy to break down a hearty meal.
Make time to work out – If you already workout then stick to it but lower the intensity and time. This way your body doesn’t turn to mush from a whole month of no workouts. If you don’t normally exercise, try to add a bit of light activity in to your day. Go for a walk after your hearty meal to help with digestion, do some stretching before you go to bed. Keeping your body active is key to maintaining health during the fasting month.
Stay hydrated – While you aren’t drinking water during the day it is important to stay hydrated throughout the night. Still keep to 8 glasses of water as the general rule and have it at night instead. This will keep your body chugging smoothly during the day.
Eat at home – There are many tempting markets and bazaars our there during Ramadhan, but this is the easiest way to let your health slip. Home cooked food will always be healthier than what is out there, and at least you know what goes into your meal. This way you are able to still get the nutrition your body needs to function well, and we all know homemade food tastes the best. You don’t have to cook elaborate meals especially since your energy will be low after a day of fasting. Pop over to the supermarket and pick up a few simple items that can be whipped up in no time. Frozen goods heat up well and make for a quick bite. Grill up a piece of meat with some veggies and you’ll have dinner on the table in under 20minutes. Make sure you get plenty of fruits and fresh vegetables that will cleanse your body and give you the proper vitamins and minerals you need. Complex carbohydrates such as whole grains and beans will keep you full for a longer period of time. Try to have these during sahur so that you’ll feel more satisfied during the day.
Get enough sleep – Your usually sleep schedule will be all out of whack during this time, but it is important to still get 7-8 hours of sleep. The proper rest will help your body process the changes and you’ll find that this will help get you through the day.
